Requirement for 2nd provisional licence holders to be accompanied by a qualified driver deferred until 30th June 2008
The Minister for Transport has today Sunday 28 October announced some alterations to the implementation of new rules for learner drivers in direct response to the public reaction to the licensing reforms announced on last Thursday, (25 October). These alterations supersede the public notices which the RSA placed in today’s Sunday Newspapers.
“The reform of the way in which drivers are trained, tested and licensed is a central part of our action plan to make Ireland one of the safest countries in Europe for driving. Proceeding with the plan to introduce the new learner permit sets the tone for a new approach to the way we train the next generation of drivers. We have enjoyed massive public support for recent life saving measures such as mandatory alcohol testing, seatbelt wearing, mandatory use of child safety seats and the banning of the use of hand held mobile phones. These measures have saved significant numbers of lives to date. It is important to maintain public support for life saving measures and to respond to genuine concerns raised over the past 48 hours. With the new deadline for introduction of the new regulations regarding second provisional licences on June 30th 2008, people will have additional time to apply for and take their driving tests, ” said Noel Brett, Chief Executive of the Road Safety Authority.
Mr Brett confirmed that the RSA already has in place the necessary driving testing capacity to ensure that all 122,000 current driving test applicants registered up to last Thursday will be offered a driving test by March 2008. In addition, the RSA will have sufficient capacity to deal with those who have requested a driving test since then and all other applicants going forward. The RSA is committed to delivering testing on demand, (i.e., a test within 10 weeks of application) by June 2008, he concluded.
